 * Genre: Sci-Fi / Post-Apocalyptic / Psychological Drama
Synopsis
Unlike traditional period adaptations of H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi novel, this modern French-British reimagining is set in present-day Europe.
When astronomers detect a structured transmission from another galaxy, humanity waits with high hopes for contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. However, within days of the signal, a sudden, devastating global attack wipes out most of the human population.
The series follows fragmented pockets of survivors across the UK and France as they navigate an eerily silent post-apocalyptic landscape. As terrifying mechanical and biological threats begin hunting down the remaining humans, neuroscientist Bill Ward (Gabriel Byrne) and a young woman named Emily (Daisy Edgar-Jones)—who shares a strange, inexplicable connection to the invaders—work to uncover who the attackers are and why they are hell-bent on humanity’s destruction.
Key Themes
 * Human Survival & Adaptation: Focuses on how ordinary people cope with sudden, massive loss and trauma in a ruined world.
 * Connection & Isolation: Explores emotional bonds between survivors amidst complete societal collapse.
 * Biological & Temporal Mysteries: Depicts sci-fi elements centered on genetics, perception, and human-alien connections rather than loud action sequences.
Review Highlights
 * Atmospheric & Slow-Burn: The show swaps out giant classic tripods and explosive warfare for a quiet, grounded, and eerie survival atmosphere.
 * Character-Driven Narrative: Focuses heavily on personal trauma, human relationships, and ethical dilemmas during an apocalyptic crisis.
 * Performances: Strong lead performances by Gabriel Byrne and Daisy Edgar-Jones anchor the series’ darker, cerebral tone.
