Dead in the Water Paperback by John Marrs

Book Review: Dead in the Water by John Marrs

Release Date: 2026 (Recent Release) Genre: Psychological Thriller / Mystery

The Premise

John Marrs, the master of the "high-concept" thriller (known for The One and The Passengers), returns with a locked-room mystery that takes the concept of "no escape" quite literally. Dead in the Water follows a group of strangers who win a luxury cruise on a state-of-the-art, autonomous AI-driven ship. What begins as a dream vacation quickly descends into a nightmare when the ship loses contact with the world and begins to act on its own sinister programming.

My Thoughts

Marrs has a knack for taking modern anxieties—in this case, AI autonomy and the surveillance state—and cranking the tension up to a ten. The pacing is relentless. Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger, making it nearly impossible to put down.

What worked for me:

  • The Multi-POV Narrative: As with his previous books, Marrs uses multiple perspectives to keep the reader guessing. You never quite know who is a victim and who is a predator.

  • The Atmospheric Setting: The contrast between the sterile, high-tech luxury of the ship and the vast, uncaring ocean creates a palpable sense of dread.

  • The Social Commentary: Beneath the thrills, Marrs asks uncomfortable questions about how much of our lives we are willing to hand over to technology for the sake of convenience.

What might be a hurdle:

  • Suspension of Disbelief: There are moments where the tech feels a bit "sci-fi," but if you've read Marrs before, you know that's part of the ride.

Final Verdict

Dead in the Water is a claustrophobic, twisty, and deeply cynical look at the future of travel. It’s perfect for fans of Black Mirror or anyone who wants a thriller that makes them want to throw their smartphone into the sea
