Pushyamitra, who was known for his Brahmin lineage and conservative Brahmanical values, took advantage of the situation and staged a successful coup, assassinating the last Mauryan king, Brihadratha. This event marked the end of the Mauryan dynasty and the beginning of the Shunga dynasty.

Establishment of the Shunga Dynasty: Pushyamitra proclaimed himself the new ruler and established the Shunga dynasty. The new dynasty sought to revive and uphold traditional Brahmanical Hindu practices, in contrast to the more inclusive and Buddhist-centric policies of the previous Mauryan rulers.
